Best Tools to Train Your Dog to Heel

All Pet Parents who struggle to get their pups to heel… I’ve been there too! Consistent rewards-based training is a must, but often you need helping tools to instill the training you work so hard to give your dogs. We’re going to talk about what options are available to help train your dog to heel.

Harnesses: Traditional harnesses do a great job at reducing stress on a dog’s neck. They reduce discomfort when you dog decides to pull, but, they do not always help with training to heel. Harnesses actually make it easier for the dog to pull more and more. So if you don’t want to make it easier and more comfortable for your dog to get away with pulling, we do not suggest investing in a harness. Once your dog learns to heel we will come back to this as an option once your dog is trained!

Two-Clip Leads: The Halti Training Lead is one of the best in the market with a two-clip mechanism. It’s clips into a harness on the top of the dog’s back and on the front of the dog’s chest. So you will need to invest in a harness that comes equipped with two clips to hook into. There are some decent harnesses in the market for this. The two-clip mechanism allows you to control the dog’s movement very easily and reduces your dog’s pull power. When you are training your dog using a two-clip lead be sure to use the “heel” command when they are walking by your side and praise the dog for correct behavior. After a few weeks of consistently walking your dog he/she will start to understand what you expect of them. And then you can graduate to a simple single clip lead to the collar or harness, whichever you and your pup prefer!
